Stephen Smith, CPA, is a director in the tax and business accounting services departments. Stephen owned and operated his own CPA firm in Jackson prior to combining his practice with ours, he’s been with the firm for three (3) years now and is now an owner and director with Harper, Rains, Knight & Company, P.A. Having been a CPA for more than thirty years, Stephen has many years of experience in the areas of small business accounting and both business and personal income tax preparation. Stephen also has more than twenty years of experience in bankruptcy and insolvency accounting and tax issues, and serves as the Executive Director and a Board Member of the Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference. Stephen has continued to serve for many years as both a chapter 7 and chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee, as well as an examiner in several bankruptcy cases. Prior to public accounting, Stephen worked for the Mississippi State Tax Commission (now Department of Revenue) in several capacities and was a member of Board of Review which heard and decided state tax appeals. Following his tenure at the Mississippi State Tax Commission, Stephen worked for the United States Department of Justice within the Jackson Office of the United States Trustee.

Stephen and his wife Angie, have three children, five grandchildren, and reside in Madison. They are active members of Madison United Methodist Church, where Stephen has served on many committees and is an active adult sunday school teacher.
